Excelsior JET Embedded Support And Licensing

The Java SE technology is free for use on general purpose desktop and server computers, but not in embedded systems. Therefore the licensing scheme and cost structure for Excelsior JET Embedded is different.

In short, you have to pay royalties to Sun Microsystems for the embedded use of Java SE, and pay support fees to Excelsior for the use of our optimized implementation of the Java SE runtime. The fees depend on the market value (e.g. retail price) of your devices and the number of units you ship each quarter.

The licenses and costs related to Excelsior JET Embedded are discussed in more details below.

Note: The use of the Java SE Embedded technology is currently prohibited in selected types of devices, namely cell phones, wireless handheld devices, PDA, TV/STB devices, telematics devices, home gateway devices, and industrial control systems. This may change in the future, so please contact us if your device falls into any of these categories.

Evaluation

You may download an evaluation copy of Excelsior JET Embedded at no cost and without any purchase obligations, and use it for, well, evaluation purposes.

Licensing the technology

Before you may begin using Excelsior JET in production, you must enter into a commercial license agreement for the Java SE Embedded technology with Sun Microsystems.

If you are already using a certified implementation of Java SE Embedded, you already have such agreement in place, and no action on your part is required.

Production

To begin using Excelsior JET Embedded in the production environment, you have to enter into a Support Agreement with us and pay a recurring support fee, negotiated individually with each customer. The fee depends on several factors, such as:

Your selection of support services, e.g. whether you need on-site training or consulting
The market value of your Java-powered device(s)
The number of units shipped quarterly

The fees may change over time, e.g. when your production grows or you introduce more expensive devices.

Your Support Agreement will include a development license for Excelsior JET Embedded, entitling you to install our product on a reasonable number of developers' systems and build servers, and to program the optimized applications into devices for testing in your lab.

Shipment

A commercial license agreement for the Java technology normally contains an obligation to report shipments and pay royalties to Sun on a quarterly basis.

You do not have to pay any royalties to Excelsior beyond the support fees.
