Excelsior JET 6.5 to Protect Eclipse RCP Applications
The next release of Excelsior's Java SE implementation will enable protection of commercial and enterprise Eclipse RCP applications against reverse engineering and tampering.
Novosibirsk, Russia, August 1, 2008 -- The Sun disappeared completely from the sky for a couple of minutes today in the city of Novosibirsk, where Excelsior LLC, an authorized Java technology licensee and a recent entry of the Eclipse Foundation, is headquartered. Shortly after the total solar eclipse, Excelsior announced that the next version of Excelsior JET, a compliant Java SE 6 implementation enhanced with an ahead-of-time compiler and deployment toolkit, will enable protection of Eclipse RCP applications against reverse engineering and tampering.
"RCP" stands for Rich Client Platform. As opposed to Web applications, normally running on servers with limited physical and network access, Eclipse RCP applications run on end-user machines. The benefits of delivering rich client experience are thus combined with a higher risk of exposing the application code to malicious users and software.
According to the 3rd Annual Eclipse Global Enterprise Survey, conducted by Evans Data, the adoption of Eclipse RCP in the enterprise has grown from 9.3% in 2005 to 15.2% in 2007. So grow the potential costs of intellectual property theft, unauthorized access, and data security breaches as a result of attacks on application code.
"The problem is that Eclipse RCP applications are normally deployed as Java bytecode, known for its low resistance to reverse engineering and tampering," said Vitaly Mikheev, CTO, Excelsior. "Java developers commonly use obfuscators to secure application code, however, obfuscation has certain limitations and does not prevent tampering. The existing tools are also difficult to configure and use when applied to frameworks such as Eclipse RCP."
Mikheev went on to explain the Excelsior's solution. "Excelsior JET compiles platform neutral Java code down to native CPU instructions. The resulting binary executable is as hard to reverse engineer or tamper with as if the application was written in C++," he said.
Excelsior JET 6.5 will provide an ultimately straightforward user interface to compile Eclipse RCP applications to conventional Windows or Linux executables and package them for deployment.
Excelsior JET 6.5 beta 1, available immediately, is already capable of compiling the Eclipse IDE from the latest Ganymede release, and has been tested on a handful of real-world Eclipse RCP applications. The final release is scheduled to the first quarter of 2009.
"As pioneers in the area of static Java compilation Instantiations is delighted to see Excelsior JET expand into the Eclipse universe. It will be useful to many Eclipse developers as they move their software toward deployment," said Mike Taylor, CEO of Instantiations and Eclipse Foundation Board Member.
About Total Solar Eclipses
A total solar eclipse is a spectacular natural phenomenon that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is wholly obscured.
The total solar eclipse of August 1, 2008 passed right through the city of Novosibirsk, where Excelsior's office is located.
About Eclipse RCP
Eclipse RCP is a platform for building and deploying rich client applications. It includes Equinox, a component framework based on the OSGi standard, the ability to deploy native GUI applications to a variety of desktop operating systems, such as Windows, Linux and Mac OS X and an integrated update mechanism for deploying desktop applications from a central server.
Excelsior LLC provides advanced Java-compatible solutions and software development services with particular focus on optimizing compilers, high performance runtime environments and the Java technology. Excelsior is a Java Authorized Licensee and a Solution Member of the Eclipse Foundation. The flagship product of the company, Excelsior JET, is a complete solution for the acceleration, protection, and deployment of Java applications.
