console i/o

I was doing some benchmarks the other day and discovered that huge amounts of time were being chewed up in console i/o even though there was only a trivial amount of it done one character at a time.

When I turned if off, suddenly Jet surged ahead. Sun does a much better job of handling console i/o.

You'd never think to bother optimising this, but in a bakeoff, every second counts and you are losing points needlessly.
